Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the protest called by his son.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a legislator, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or see it all from your phone there on your sofa? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's determination was the chance of the former president's move to embassies near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a record of planning to ask for protection through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The legal document underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 13km from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative US President President Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will undergo a detention review on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that the former president be permitted to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he required frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of heading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plan which involved plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of his followers stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, Brasília.

The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the period, the legal team called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 national vote.
