New research indicates that individuals who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users purchasing such treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication report a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become starving," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle management.
